As Christmas rapidly approaches, my wife Heather and I find ourselves discussing appropriate gifts for various individuals in our lives. As your new MLA, there are a number of gifts I would like to give, if it were that simple, to Kings County.
First, a new airport for Kings County! Ideally, located within 100 kilometres of Halifax and on the Valley floor. Why the Valley floor and likely on farm land? The simple fact is that the Valley floor has the most sunny days of any part of the province; that is critical to the flying community and the ultimate success of the airport. Why within 100 kms of Halifax? That distance would be close enough to attract the Halifax small plane community and is critical to an airport’s future. Let's hope that our three levels of government can make this happen in 2014!
A second Christmas wish for the Valley would be the Michelin expansion. Michelin has been an excellent corporate citizen over the years and it would be a tremendous boost to our economy to have them make further investment in the tire plant. Cross our fingers on that one!
Third wish is twinning of the 101. Again, the importance of transportation infrastructure cannot be over-emphasized! Having driven delivery trucks, I can assure you that the busiest highway in the Maritimes is the 102 from Truro to Halifax and second busiest is the 101 from the Valley to the city. Both prosperity and safety will increase with the completion of the twinning of highway.
Fourth wish.... do I get four wishes? High speed Internet for every home in our county. It is amazing how quickly a luxury has become a necessity. But it has, and just as much as good roads and snow plowing.
More wishes? Of course.... Healthy strawberry fields, better roads, no tethered dogs, a balanced budget, lower taxes..... I could go on....
But, for now, a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year! Remember....a good neighbour is better than a relative far away, so let's try to be one in the coming year!
