Police say a Dartmouth woman is in serious but stable condition at the QEII hospital in Halifax after she was attacked by a man in the early hours of Saturday.

Halifax Regional Police responded to an assault call around 2:50 a.m. at an address on Primrose Street.

A witness told officers a woman was lying on the ground while a man kicked her repeatedly.

The 53-year-old woman was still lying on the sidewalk and had suffered what appeared to be a serious head injury by the time police arrived minutes later.

The suspect fled on foot and no arrests were made.

Police are looking for a man in his 20s with short brown hair, about five-foot-eight and 185 pounds.

He was believed to be wearing a blue T-shirt and jeans.
