Halifax police have charged a 19-year-old man with uttering death threats and criminal harassment on a pair of internet websites.

Glen Canning, father of Rehtaeh Parsons, confirmed to Metro Saturday that he was the victim of the alleged threats. He also says the accused is one of the two charged in his daughter’s case.

“I wasn’t originally going to say that or make that connection, but I guess it’s out there now,” he said.

Rehtaeh died in April, 2013 after she was taken off life support following a suicide attempt.

The 17-year-old had allegedly been sexually assaulted at a party two years earlier, and was bullied after a photo of the incident was shared via social media.

Two teens are charged with distributing child pornography, while one of them also faces a charge of making child pornography.

Police say on Aug. 2, 2013, they received a complaint from a 49-year-old man that he had been threatened online.

Police say threats from the suspect were posted underneath a YouTube video posted by the victim. Other threats were made on a site called WordPress.

“They’re still there, I never take them down. They are on my YouTube channel,” Canning said of the alleged threats.

RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae would not confirm the victim in this case as Glen Canning, but was able to explain why it took several months for a suspect to be charged.

“We had to work with international policing partners and of course get the warrants executed at the online sites, and the response from those social media sites played a role in the timeline in this investigation,” he said.

Search warrants were executed to obtain IP addresses and other information.

Police seized a computer and electronic storage devices from a home on Peter Court in Eastern Passage.

On Thursday evening, police arrested and charged a 19-year-old man at the same address.

He will be appearing in Dartmouth provincial court on May 20.

" He also says the accused is one of the two charged in her daughter’s case. " Can you tell your reporters or editor he and she are NOT interchangeable. A person can't have a gender change in a sentence. Not the first story where gender is mixed in each sentence.
