A Truro man has been convicted of a single count of cruelty by failing to provide medical attention to his dog.
Gregory Donald Peppard, 33, appeared in provincial court Wednesday.
Nova Scotia SPCA Cruelty Investigators seized Daisy, an American Staffordshire terrier, from Peppard on Nov. 14, 2013. A release from the animal protection agency states she was suffering from a severe case of mange that was one of the worst the investigators had ever seen.
Mange is a skin condition caused by an infestation of mites that burrow into either follicles or skin. It can cause severe itching, sores and skin lesions, leading to hair loss and immune system disorders.
Peppared was fined $500, ordered to pay $2,500 in restitution to the SPCA and has been banned from owning an animal for five years.
Daisy is currently in the SPCA Foster Care program, but will be available for adoption soon.
