With the New Year upon us, Nova Scotia RCMP reminds all New Year's revellers of the importance of planning a safe drive home if they are celebrating tonight.

Police know that many Nova Scotians will be attending house parties and bars tonight to ring in the New Year. RCMP are delivering a simple message: Make your plans to get home safe before you start drinking. Select a designated driver, schedule a cab, stay at a friend's house or take transit, where available.

Police will be conducting random checkpoints across the province targeting impaired drivers including those who are driving under the influence of drugs.

Impaired drivers can be on our roadways at all hours of the day so RCMP are asking for your help to identify and apprehend impaired drivers. Here is what you can do if you think you see a potential impaired driver:

• Pull over and call 911

• State your location

• Vehicle description

• License plate number

• Colour of vehicle

• Make and model of vehicle

• Direction of travel for the Vehicle

• Description of driver
