There weren't enough Kings County councillors on hand to hold the monthly meeting Feb. 5.
Following procedures and legislation, Warden Diana Brothers adjourned the meeting at 6:10 p.m. when it was clear they wouldn't have the required six of 11 councillors.
"This is something that has never come up before," Brothers said.
Brothers and councillors Bob Best, Kim MacQuarrie, Pauline Raven and Brian Hirtle were in attendance. Coun. Patricia Bishop is working in Kenya and Brothers said Coun. Wayne Atwater is away. Deputy Warden Mike Ennis and Coun. Emma Van Rooyen are ill.
Brothers said council plans to meet at 1 p.m. on Feb. 6 to officially appoint a returning officer for the upcoming special elections in Districts 8 and 11. Both seats are currently vacant. It is hoped either Van Rooyen or Ennis will be well enough to attend the brief meeting so there will be a quorum.
Since this is now considered an urgent matter, there is provision in the Municipal Government Act to hold the brief, unadvertised meeting to appoint a returning officer. All other agenda items from the Feb. 5 meeting will wait.
