A man from Wolfville sold his Ford Explorer on an Internet site recently, then had the cheque for payment bounce.

Community policing officer Blair MacMurtery recommends not taking a cheque in payment from a stranger.

“Do a little background,” he recommends, especially when selling something on the Internet. “There are other ways to secure payment.”

If there is not enough money in the cheque writer’s account to cover the cheque, the cheque will be returned to the seller’s bank as NSF, or non-sufficient funds.

Was this a case of cheque fraud as well.. or just an accidental bounced cheque.. People need to also be aware the fraudsters will also use fake cheques to make purchases such as vehicles.. And in those cases you wont see your vehicle or the money! We print business cheques for a living and security features reduce the odds of someone altering the amounts and payee information but if people still cash cheques from people or companies they dont know then the protection ends!
