An Alberta woman contacted Kings RCMP last week after she did a credit check and found there was a mortgage, cell phone and line of credit in her name here.

To avoid identity theft, Const. Blair MacMurtery advises an annual credit check, which is free.

Over 21 million Canadians have credit reports. And most of us have no idea what's in them.

You can ask for a free copy of your credit report by mail. There are two main credit bureaus in Canada: Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada.
