Council has defeated a motion to contribute $500 toward the Scotian Horticultural Congress annual convention in Greenwich.

Coun. Kim MacQuarrie said it wouldn’t be fair to others who got their applications for Municipal Economic Development funds in on deadline.

MacQuarrie said it’s a profitable conference not in need of municipal funds. While she applauds the organizers for making the conference profitable, she suggested using municipal grant money in other ways to help support agriculture in Kings.

The horticultural conference has seen significant surpluses in recent years, but is projecting a $350 deficit for the 2013 conference.

A cost estimate provided to the municipality shows revenue for the 2013 conference is projected to be $36,500 with proposed expenses of $36,850. The conference had a profit of $15,049.52 in 2006 and $12,139.25 in 2007.

Let's just hope that Kings County Council feels the same way.
