Eleanore Howard

Eleanore Howard is the recipient of the Excellence in Nursing Clinical Practice Award from the Nova Scotia College of Registered Nurses.

Howard is an enterostomal therapy nurse at Annapolis Valley Health, working with individuals and families with ostomies, acute and chronic wounds and urinary and fecal continence problems.

She was nominated by two colleagues, Debora Mander and Rita vanVulpen, who noted that Howard is well-respected by both her clients and colleagues for her knowledge, wisdom and openness.

Howard is chair of the college’s provincial educational advisory committee and academic advisor for the Canadian Association of Enterostomal Therapy Nursing Educational Program. She is also a member of the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists.

Despite her busy schedule, Howard finds time to mentor nursing students, educate front-line staff and is frequently sought after to present to other health care professionals and patients.

Howard has developed a new wound care documentation protocol, led three prevalence studies on pressure ulcer assessments and was instrumental in the implementation of the BRADEN scale, which assesses a patient's risk of developing a pressure ulcer.
