August 5 update on tropical storm Bertha

Bertha will give Nova Scotia a wide berth this week, as the now tropical storm heads towards Newfoundland.

According to the morning update Aug. 5 from the Canadian Hurricane Centre, the second named storm of the season is 731 kilometres west-northwest of Bermuda. The system’s maximum sustained winds are 102 km/h and it’s heading northeast at 35 km/h.

Environment Canada says the storm will accelerate northeastward south of Nova Scotia, bringing little more than clouds and ocean swells along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia especially later Aug. 6 into the next morning when wave heights near two metres are expected.
