Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross were busy at opposite ends of Nova Scotia on Sunday, Aug. 3, assisting people displaced by weekend house fires.

In Yarmouth, three people were impacted by a blaze reported around 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, that damaged a rented two-storey house at 31 Barnard St.

The Red Cross arranged emergency lodging, food and clothing purchases for a woman who lived at the house plus her adult son and daughter-in-law who were visiting at the time. There were no reported injuries from the fire, though the older woman was briefly checked at hospital as a precaution.

In Sydney, a young woman and her five-year-old son were forced out by a kitchen fire Saturday afternoon, Aug. 2, that damaged half of a older wooden-frame duplex at 190 Henry St. in the city’s Whitney Pier neighbourhood.  They were staying with a relative and the Red Cross  assisted with purchases of clothing and food, and provided personal-care items, blankets and a comfort toy for the young boy.
