Berwick's new all way stop at the intersection of Cottage and Commercial Streets
Distracted drivers best beware in Berwick: Kings District RCMP is monitoring a new four-way stop in downtown Berwick since it was put in place in early July.
Between July 18 - 20, RCMP handed out warnings to 14 drivers who failed to stop at the new all-way stop located at the intersection of Cottage and Commercials Streets.
“They are trying to get the message across,” about Berwick’s new traffic feature, said Community Policing Officer Constable Blair MacMurtery.
He recognizes there can be a period of adjustment for drivers, especially locals, when features like four way stops are added in communities. But he pointed out police are under no obligation to issue warnings when signage had been posted in advance, noting officers “have complete discretion” it comes to issuing warnings or fines for failing to stop.
“Sometimes there are other issues at play,” such as seatbelt and hand held technology violations, added MacMurtery.
On July 21 charges were laid against two drivers who failed to obey the posted stop signs. Fines of $176.45 were handed out to drivers at 11:44 a.m. and noon.
