Updated: Power still out morning after Annapolis County forest fire

Update: As of 9:20 a.m. July 13, the power is still out for  312 Nova Scotia Power customers in Nictaux South and East, Middleton East, Victoria Vale, Margaretsville, Highway 10 to Crul Hole and surrounding areas. The power utility is estimating a restoration time of 11 a.m. July 13.

The area of Annapolis County where the July 12 forest fire took place is currently under "very high" risk of fire on the Department of Natural Resources fire weather index.

Update: As of 11 p.m. July 12, Nova Scotia Power is giving an estimated restoration time of 2 a.m. for customers affected by the forest fire earlier this afternoon. 

Update: As of 9:40 p.m., Highway 10 is reported to be reopened. However, Nova Scotia Power is still reporting 382 customers in the area without electricity. Estimated restoration time is 12:15 a.m. 

 

Earlier story: 

Power is out for 382 Nova Scotia Power customers near Nictaux - this time because of a fire, not a hurricane. 

According to the electrical utility's website, those affected are in Nictaux South and East, Middleton East, Victoria Vale, Margaretsville, Highway 10 to Crul Hole and surrounding areas. 

Crews from several Annapolis and Kings county departments have been on the scene of a forest fire off Highway 10 near Nictaux since just after 3 p.m. July 12. 

Middleton, Nictaux, Lawrencetown, Kingston, Springfield,  Kingston, New Germany and Department of Natural Resources firefighters have been involved in the efforts, with crews at the scene battling the flames. A DNR helicopter is assisting.  

Highway 10 is closed from Varner Mountain Road to Crisp Road,  as is Alpena Road. 

The extent of the fire or the cause is not known at this time. 

Brush and camping fires are currently restricted in all Nova Scotia counties, with burning allowed only between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m., depending on municipal bylaws.
