A special council meeting regarding the selection of an interim chief administrative officer (CAO) for the Municipality of West Hants has been cancelled.

The meeting was originally slated for July 2 at 7 p.m. Council will now meet privately with a lawyer at that time to discuss how to proceed with the appointment of an interim CAO.

Warden Richard Dauphinee said interviews were conducted earlier in the day July 2, and council wanted to confer with the municipality’s lawyer before selecting “somebody for the short term to fill in for the CAO.”

“We wanted to meet with our solicitor first to make sure we’re making the right moves,” he said.

Dauphinee said there is no indication at this point of how long an interim CAO will be needed. It is expected the successful candidate will be selected during an upcoming meeting of council, the warden added.

CAO Cheryl Chislett is due to appear in Windsor provincial court July 15 on a charge of assault with a weapon. The charge, issued June 24, is in relation to an alleged altercation involving a 57-year-old man sources have identified as Chislett’s husband.

Chislett, a 54-year-old Martock resident, is released from custody on conditions.
