Federal time for HRM man for North Kentville weapon, cocaine charges

An Ostrea Lake, Halifax Regional Municipality, man has been sentenced to federal custody for possessing a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace and cocaine trafficking.

Raymond Richard Corkum, 32, pleaded not guilty to the charges in July 2013. The matters were adjourned for trial, but Corkum changed his pleas to guilty on June 5. The matters were adjourned to June 17 for sentencing.

Judge Claudine MacDonald sentenced Corkum to two years of federal custody for unlawfully possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He has been ordered to forfeit offence-related property and the court granted a secondary DNA order. Corkum was sentenced to 30 days in custody, to be served concurrently, for possessing a dangerous weapon, a baton. Corkum has been ordered to forfeit the baton.

Corkum committed the offences in North Kentville Jan. 4, 2013.
