Two Kings County teenagers want to lend a hand to families affected by the Moncton shootings.

June is already busy for Brittany Keddy and Kelsey Smith, who are set to graduate from Central Kings this month, but they are taking time to run a fundraiser for the RCMP.

“We wanted to do something that helped out the families,” 18-year-old Smith said, “because neither one of us could really imagine losing a parent or anybody in our family from something like this.”

The pair will have a booth at the County Fair Mall June 14 and at the Coldbrook Foodland June 15 to collect donations for the RCMP Foundation.

“We are also setting up coin collections at different businesses around Kentville, Coldbrook and New Minas,” Keddy added.

“It is all going towards the Moncton Fallen RCMP Members Fund and we are hoping to present it in cheque form to the RCMP in person,” Smith said.

Their high school is also supporting their efforts.

“We support (their) efforts completely,” Central Kings principal Janice Foote said.

“The donated money will go through our student government to the families affected by the tragic events in Moncton.”

Keddy and Smith are also in communication with the Kings District RCMP.

The shooting deaths of three officers June 4 had a big impact on the best friends, particularly because of Keddy’s postsecondary plans – attending school just a half-kilometre outside the lockdown area.

“It personally hits home for me because I’m going to attend Oulton (College), which is in Moncton, in September and I’m taking policing and corrections,” the Coldbrook teen said. “We will be working alongside RCMP.”

“If this was next year and Brittany was up there,” Smith chimed in, “I would be freaking more than I already was.”

The young women have a helping mindset: Smith plans to be a nurse and Keddy is set on police work.

“I’ve always liked watching Criminal Minds and crime shows,” Keddy said. “I just want to be able to make a difference and help other people.”
