Whitman Bridge is closed to traffic until at least mid-June.

Whitman Bridge on Whitman Road  -  between Maple Avenue in Aylesford and Ward Road in Millville – is closed after an inspection revealed safety concerns.

The structure was added to Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal’s list of renovation and construction priorities, effective April 11.

“As is the case with all provincial bridges, the Whitman Bridge is regularly inspected and maintained. After a recent inspection, an issue was found that meant the bridge would need repairs, and until then, we are closing the bridge to traffic for safety reasons,” department spokeswoman Pam Menchenton said.

“The timber cap supporting the corner of the bridge is damaged and no longer supports the bridge structure.”

The entire bridge will need to be raised, and the damaged timber cap removed and replaced, she said.  The department’s steel bridge crew will do the work, which Menchenton said should be completed by mid- to late-June. The bridge will remain closed to traffic until the repairs are complete.

During the construction, traffic will be detoured using Maple Avenue, Victoria Road and Ward Road - an added distance of approximately four kilometers.

I heard rumors that the bridge will never be fixed. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
