A Grand Pré goalie has been named top goalie in Atlantic Canada.

Kate Spooner, who plays with the East Hants Pro Cresting Penguins, was named top goalie at the Midget Female Atlantics in Deer Lake, NL on April 5.

Her teammate, Moira MacDonald, was named top scorer.

“There was also a banquet that all the teams went to where one of my teammates Moira MacDonald won top point and as a complete surprise I won top goaltender. I had no idea I would get it and was so shocked when I was called,” said Spooner.

Spooner had the shut-out in an 8-0 win over the host team on April 4.

The Penguins, representing Nova Scotia at the tournament, will play in the gold medal game today against Moncton at 11 a.m.

“We played Moncton yesterday in our last round robin game and because of the how the other teams finished we knew we would already be in the finals versus Moncton on Sunday,” Spooner said. “It was nice to play with no pressure but we knew we still wanted to win. It was a really fast paced game. We were up 1-0 going into the second and then they scored one that was through a screen on a power play. The game ended 1-1 even after overtime and we were all very happy with how we played.”

Spooner, who was between the pipes in that game, was named player of the game for the Penguins.

The winner of this year’s Atlantic Championship will move on to represent the region at the 2014 ESSO Cup being held in Stoney Creek-Hamilton, Ontario from April 20-26. The Atlantic Midget Female Championship is the top minor hockey tournament in the region for female players aged 15, 16 and 17.
