Hockeyville announcement expected tonight

Wet weather couldn't curb the enthusiasm of participants in the grand street parade through the village April 5 as Kingston celebrated Hockey Day.

A full day of events are planned, capped off with the announcement tonight of this year's Hockeyville winner. The Credit Union Centre beat out the Bedeque and Area Recreation Centre in Central Bedeque, PEI, to represent eastern Canada in the nation-wide contest.

The day got underway with a breakfast, followed by the parade. Also on the agenda is a full slate of hockey games at the Credit Union Centre. The midget girls’ Valley Wild will be taking to the ice for a game at 12:30 p.m. That game will be followed up with a match between the Valley Golden Oldies at 2:30 p.m. A kids’ hockey skills competition gets underway at 3:30 p.m. before a pick up hockey game mixing the girls’ and boys’ teams from West Kings High School at 4:30 p.m.

By 6 p.m., it's hoped area residents will begin filling the stands for the Hockeyville announcement, which will be made during the Hockey Night in Canada pre-show. A big screen television will be set up on the ice for people to watch the broadcast, which will feature segments profiling the top two communities. The announcement is expected between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
