Staff at the Kings County Advertiser and Register has been named as finalists in a number of categories in the Better Newspapers Competition.

The annual competition recognizes excellence in journalism in the Atlantic region every year.

Although not all of the finalists for the award categories have been announced, the Advertiser and Register have garnered eight nominations already.

Members of the editorial staff – reporters Wendy Elliott, John DeCoste and Kirk Starratt, associate editor Jennifer Hoegg and editor Jennifer Vardy Little – received a nod for the cold case series of stories that appeared in the June 10, 2013 edition of the Advertiser.

Hoegg picked up three individual nominations, including outstanding journalist and best investigative story for her Cornwallis Inn coverage. Hoegg and Vardy Little have both been nominated as finalists in the best page design category.

Laurent d’Entremont, author of the Storyteller column, was nominated in the best general interest column category, while Laura Churchill Duke, writer of the Valley Family Fun column, was nominated in the best specialty column category.

KingsCountyNews.ca has also been named a finalist in the best website category.

The Advertiser and Register lead the nominations thus far among TC Media's weekly newspapers group, which also includes the Hants Journal, the Yarmouth Vanguard, the Digby Courier, the Annapolis County Spectator, the Liverpool Advance and the Shelburne County Coastguard. So far, the group has received 24 nominations.

Winners will be announced May 30 during the Newspapers Canada Ink and Beyond annual conference in Charlottetown.

These nominations build on last week’s announcement that sports reporter DeCoste had won first place in the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards for best sports coverage and the Advertiser had received a blue ribbon for general excellence in its circulation category.
