Canada is on to the semifinals at the Winter Universiade in Italy following a 6-0 quarter-final win over Slovakia.
Acadia’s Liam Heelis (Georgetown, ON) opened the scoring for Canada, which led 3-0 after one period and 4-0 after 40 minutes, with a power play goal at 7:09 of the opening period – his second goal of the tournament, to go along with two assists.
Canada (3-1) moves on to face Russia in a semifinal match-up Dec. 20 at 11:30 AST. The Russians (4-0), two-time defending champions of the biennial competition, advanced with a 5-1 win over the Czech Republic.
Kazakhstan (4-0), the top team in Canada’s pool, and the United States (3-1) will meet in the other semifinal Dec. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
