While someone was in a Coldbrook store for 10 minutes on Dec. 10, a vehicle window was smashed and a purse grabbed.
Since Nov. 12, police have had 66 reports of thefts from vehicles in Kings County. In 22 of the cases, windows were broken to gain entry.
Reports indicate that in 51 of the incidents the vehicle door was unlocked.
Concerning this crime trend, Const. Blair MacMurtery said last week that the key concern is individuals leaving valuable items visible in vehicles.
That, he indicated, is the enticement to break the window. MacMurtery said the best advice is to lock up any vehicle, but also stow valuables out of sight.
“They’re watching us go into restaurants or stores,” he said. “If you see anyone suspicious around vehicles, call the police.”
