Up to 30 cm of snow in the forecast across Nova Scotia

It appears Kings County is in for its first major brush with winter this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Nova Scotia and meteorologist Paula Sutherland is predicting up to 30 centimetres of snow may fall Dec. 15 into Dec. 16.

“The storm hasn’t actually formed yet and the models are constantly changing, but the latest indication is there will be a major snowfall in that part of Nova Scotia,” Sutherland said.

Sutherland said a low pressure system is forecast to form in the southern United States early Dec. 14 and move off the coast of Virginia. From there, it’s supposed to hug the Atlantic coastline before skirting coastal Nova Scotia.

Just how close to Nova Scotia the storm comes is anyone’s guess, with some models suggesting it will stay far enough out to sea to only affect the eastern shore, while other models have it coming closer to the province.

“As it approaches the region it will intensify,” Sutherland said. “We’re expecting some snowfall over most of the Maritimes, especially the mainland of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton.”

It will be less of a snow event in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Sutherland said the forecast will be updated frequently as the storm approaches.

She said it’s too early to determine whether this snow will stick around to ensure a white Christmas, although she pointed out temperatures are supposed to remain below freezing through most of next week.

“Chances are that if we get that much snow, chances are it will stick around for awhile,” she said.

Days before the expected storm, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the weekend. The statement says there is potential for “significant” snow, strong winds and blowing snow for much of mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton.

Environment Canada says it will continue to monitor the development of the storm and will provide updates as new information becomes available.

Those planning travel or other weather-sensitive activities for Sunday are being advised to keep an eye on future forecasts for more information and any warnings that may be issued.
