Hantsport’s outdoor rink may be moved to the tennis courts this winter.

Mayor Robbie Zwicker asked council to consider allowing the community volunteers that maintain the rink year after year to move it the tennis courts for a change.

“Being a rink rat myself, using the existing parking lot out front in troublesome,” said Zwicker, who works with Rick King, Jeff Starratt and Bob Bird to flood the rink at nighttime.

Zwicker says the ice surface in the parking lot often has depressions, melts in the middle or becomes brittle at the sides.

Deputy mayor Harold Bulger said he’s likely to support the proposal as long as members of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre’s (HMCC) board of directors are in favour of the idea.

“I think it is the perfect spot for it,” Bulger added.

Several council members expressed support for the idea, with many noting that it would be nice if the rink users could have access to the tennis club’s building to change into their skates.

Coun. Margot Bureaux asked that the rink remain accessible for use in the off hours.

“I would rather not have it locked because there are people who do go out at off times.”

Zwicker agreed to discuss the idea with HMCC members and return to council with an update.
