Officials in Berwick may understand the reason behind the close to 20 per cent increase in Valley Waste Resource’s 2013-2014 operating budget, but they are not happy about it.

Valley Waste officials presented their annual budget for the coming year at a meeting with its municipal partners last month. Berwick Finance Director Greg Towne explained the budget increase of 19.94 per cent is attributable to increased fuel and transportation costs and changes in contracts for collection and recycling services.

Berwick’s portion of the increase would amount to approximately $33,000 per year.

“That is huge,” pointed out Towne, who said the town could be forced to find economies within its own budget to cover the increase in costs associated with waste management services.

The Valley Waste Management collective includes the Municipality of Kings and Annapolis counties and the towns of Hantsport, Wolfville, Kentville, Middleton, Bridgetown and Annapolis Royal.
