The Road to the NHL takes many different twists and turns for players seeking their first glimpse of the sights and sounds of a National Hockey League arena.
Halifax writer Philip Croucher will bring his book, Road to the NHL: The incredible stories of 25 Maritimers making it to The Show., to New Minas for a book signing on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Coles.
Croucher said the book, which deals with the players’ path to the NHL and not the events that happened once they got there, was not meant to identify the best players the three Atlantic provinces had to offer. He had no interest in a popularity contest.
“I just wanted to celebrate 25 players and the road they took,” he said.
“They are stars, there are role players, there are today’s players and there are yesterday’s players. So I think there is a nice mix for everybody.”
And that’s exactly what he has put together, in a nice easy reading style in which he shows regional balance as well as staying true to his plan for eight pages per player. That follows a meaningful foreward by former NHL coach and general manager Doug MacLean, a P.E.I. native.
So if you are looking for tales of Pittsburgh Penguin superstar Sidney Crosby growing up in Cole Harbour, N.S.; or Ottawa Senators’ coach Paul MacLean learning his trade playing university hockey at Dalhousie; or former Penguin Lowell MacDonald and his fear of flying; the off-the-ice truculence of Boston Bruins’ Brad Marchand; or long-time NHL journeyman Forbes Kennedy, well, just being Forbes, this is the book for you.
No need to be a Maritimer to enjoy that.
