Brigadoon Village is inviting families to visit the camp on Halloween for a special, spooky night.
“It was born out of the fact people told us Halloween is not the most friendly holiday for kids,” Jennifer Kelday, director of programs, said of the third annual event.
Children with chronic illnesses or disabilities, teenagers and young adults with special needs – and even kids with food allergies – face barriers to enjoying trick or treating, she said.
“If they have a food allergies, sometimes they can’t eat any of the treats due to cross-contamination,” Kelday said. “Then there’s the accessibility issue of going door to door if you have a mobility problem. Most doors have steps – and we don’t have a lot of sidewalks.”
Houses decorated with flashing lights and loud noises can be difficult for children with autism, too, she said.
“We also get a lot of people in their 20s who have Down syndrome who love Halloween, but it might not seem appropriate to go door to door anymore.”
Parents of toddlers are also excited about the event, Kelday said, because they want their children to enjoy Halloween fun without too much junk food.
Brigadoon staff and volunteers will be setting up 10 trick-or-treating areas in the Aylesford Lake camp’s cabins, followed by crafts, games and food in the main dining room.
“We want to build a community here,” Kelday said. “We want to make (Brigaween) part of the tradition they do with their family.
“And we want the kids who can’t get out for Halloween be able to come here and have a Halloween.”
Michaels has sponsored the event, reducing the cost to $2, Kelday said. Pre-registration is required to make sure there are enough goodies. Halloween costumes available for borrowing.
