September is back-to-school month for many Kings County youth. RCMP community policing officer Const. Blair MacMurtery has some tips to help ensure the safety of students.
Drivers are reminded to obey all signals, he said, when approaching a school bus. Fines for passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing are approximately $400.
MacMurtery said the motto for drivers this month should be ‘stop on red, kids ahead.’
“The alternating flashing red lights mean only that the bus is stopped to load or unload student passengers, who may need to cross the street to or from the bus,” he said.
Enforcement activities by police this month will focus on school zones, crosswalks, school buses and distracted driving.
Drivers are reminded to slow to 30km/h in school zones if the normal speed limit in the area is 50km/h or less or slow to 50km/h if the normal speed limit in the area is 60km/h or more.
Take extra care when traveling around school buses, MacMurtery advised.
