An early morning fire Tuesday, May 20 had fire crews from Brooklyn to Aylesford in Grand Pre, where a large warehouse burned to the ground.

Wolfville firefighters answered the alarm at 2:27 a.m., which came in as a structure fire. “When we got there, there was heavy fire in the backside of the building,” said Wolfville Deputy Chief Kevin White. The warehouse along the old rail siding was approximately 60 feet by 300 feet, two storeys. “It was so far advanced, we actually brought in an excavator and just tore it down.”

Fire departments were involved up and down the Valley as stand-in crews or at the scene, with the biggest role filled by tankers. White says a hydrant system at the new Grand Pre Park interpretive centre was used, along with a couple of nearby ponds, and water only had to be hauled a couple of kilometres. “The building is right to the ground, it went very fast,” White said. Crews left the scene at 7:30 a.m.

There were at least three occupants of the building, including a dance club, but there was no one in the building at the time of the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters. Kings RCMP also responded, and the fire marshall was expected to survey the site later May 20. “The cause is undetermined at this point,” White said.
