EMERGENCY SERVICES PROVIDER FUND The Nova Scotia Government has made $250,000 available to successful applicants to help cash strapped volunteer fire departments buy expensive equipment such as pumps, hoses, extraction tools or defibulators. The fund will pay up to 60 per cent of the cost of equipment, excluding purchases of fire trucks. It will also help with construction upgrades at aging fire halls. Rural fire departments can access a new $5 million program to buy or replace aging equipment.

FOOD DRIVE The Port Maitland Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting a food drive throughout their fire area for the Yarmouth Food Bank on Saturday, Oct. 13. They welcome your support.

FIREFIGHTERS BOWLING Another team has been added to the league as members of the West Pubnico department made their first appearance last week. Results were: Naiad 8 - West Pubnico 0, Carleton 8 - Salmon River 0, Wedgeport & District 8 - Carleton #2 0, Ladies 6 - Neptune 2, East Pubnico 8. Naiad's Gerald Thibodeau rolled both the high single and triple with scores of 156 and 378. The standings after two weeks are:

1925 AMERICAN LAFRANCE PUMPER Built at the Canadian-American Lafrance Plant, Toronto, Ontario. Used by the Bridgewater Fire Dep artment and later by the village of Petite Riviere, it contains six cylinders, chain drive, right hand steering and a triple combination (pump/hose and a chemical/booster tank). It has an 840 gallon per minute rating. The vehicle originally had hard rubber tires, and was similar to the 1924 YFD Lafrance.

FIRE PREVENTION IN YOUR SLEEPING AREA More than half of all fatal home fires happen while people are sleeping. You can save lives by installing smoke detectors and automatic sprinklers and by practicing family escape drills and remember this fire-safety rule: "Never smoke in bed or when you are drowsy." Make your family escape plan - practice! Have two exits from each bedroom. Have everyone sleep with bedroom doors closed to protect against heat and smoke, giving time to escape the emergency.
