Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood, will christen the Nova Star on Monday, May 12, in Boston by breaking the ceremonial bottle of champagne over its bow, fulfilling a nearly five-year quest to restore an important economic and tourism link between her hometown and New England.

The Nova Star, a brand-new, state-of-the-art cruise ferry, will arrive at the Black Falcon Terminal in Boston Harbor at 7 a.m. Monday after being escorted into the harbor by local fireboats. The event signals the return of cruise ferry service between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Portland, Maine that ended in 2009, dealing a severe economic blow to the the small town on the southern tip of the province.

Nova Star, a 528-foot cruise ferry, was built in Singapore at a cost of $165 million. Beginning Thursday, it will make daily roundtrip crossings between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Portland, Maine.

During the 10-hour voyage, passengers will have access to three restaurants, including fine dining, a theater and conference center for live entertainment, plus a spa, casino, art gallery, children’s play area and more. The ship has a capacity of more than 1,200 passengers and over 300 vehicles – cars, trucks, campers and RVs.

Joining Mayor Mood for the christening ceremony will be representatives of Nova Star Cruises, and Patrick Binns, the counsel general of Canada in Boston
