Central School’s school advisory council (SAC) would like to see Yarmouth town council endorse the former Yarmouth Junior High School location as the site for a new elementary school.

In a letter sent to council, which was on the agenda of an April 24 committee of the whole meeting, the SAC asks to be permitted to make a presentation to council in May. Councillors accepted the request.

A new elementary school is planned for Yarmouth to house students from Central and South Centennial schools, along with an undetermined number of students from Arcadia Consolidated School.

All of these schools are slated for closure based on March 2013 motions made by the Tri-County Regional School Board.

The school board will be forming a site selection committee, which will be tasked with identifying three potential sites. Ultimately the final site decision rests with the minister of education and the province.

At a recent school board meeting it was stated that the site selection process requires that at least one of the proposed sites involve one of the existing school sites, provided the necessary criteria is met.

The Central SAC thinks the site across the street from where Central is located now makes the most sense for a new elementary school.

“Our Yarmouth Central SAC firmly believes a new, centrally located elementary school on this site would provide the greatest advantages to all students and their families, the numerous local organizations and support services that benefit from proximity to the school, as well as to the town and community of Yarmouth,” the Central SAC writes in a letter to the town.

“A new school in this location would be more cost-effective as it could incorporate the existing full-size . . . gymnasium already on site,” the letter states. “In addition the existing parking and sports/soccer field could be incorporated into the plan at a fraction of the cost of building new.”

It's a no brainer - centrally located and cost effective.
