High winds fanned a grass fire on the Lewiston Road in Ashmore this afternoon but dampness in the wooded area slowed its progress.

Weymouth Fire Department responded to the call at 2:10 p.m. Because the page came in as “a big grass fire”, they requested mutual aid from the Plympton Gilbert’s Cove Fire Department.

Weymouth Fire Chief Roy Mullen said much of the fire had burned itself out and the firefighters quickly contained what was still burning in and around the nearby woods.

“We had most of the fire contained by the time Plympton arrived but it was good to have the backup,” said Mullen. “The high winds were a major factor in this getting out of control quickly.”

Mullen said the cause of the fire was undetermined.

The people living closest to the scene said they saw the fire when they came home and called 911.
