A long time sawmill has shut its doors in Queens County.

L & S Lumber in Caledonia, once known as NF Douglas Lumber Ltd., ceased operations last week.

The sawmill has many years of history behind it, operating formerly as the NF Douglas sawmill from the late 1800s until it was sold in a few years ago.

The mill employed upwards of 40 people in the early 2000s, but that was down to fewer than a dozen when it closed.

The mill was originally started and owned by Willis Forest, N F Douglas had another mill just up the road which shut down around 1980 I think. I believe Douglas's purchased Willis's mill in the 1990's. Its a shame to see it shut down, that mill raised many families over its history.
