An abandoned fish plant near the ferry slip in Freeport burned to the ground last night.

Freeport Fire Department was called near 12:30 a.m. to the fire and were still on scene at first light. Tiverton, Westport, Digby Neck and Digby also spent the night working to containing the blaze.

No one was injured and no idea at this point how the fire started.

There was no power to building and Digby RCMP are treating the fire as suspicious.

Quick update exactly 2 days from estimated ignition. Fire is still burning and toxic clouds are to strong for the ferry to dock. People have the scent of the burnt Fiberglas, ammonia tanks, lead paint, plastic fishtrays along with many other harmfull chemicals in there houses quite a few miles away. No sign of the fire slowing yet

Fire is still burning as of 9:00pm, April 6th. But it is localized to a roughly 20'x20' area. Lots of plastic and chemical tanks stored in the building. Freeport is filled with toxic smoke clouds and will be for a few days most likely.
