It may be spring but it’s been a long winter. And an expensive one.
The town of Yarmouth had budgeted $100,000 for salting and snow removal in this fiscal year. As of the end of February the snow removal costs had been $35,000 higher than what was budgeted. And this doesn’t include the month of March, meaning it doesn’t include last week’s blizzard.
At a committee of the whole meeting last Thursday there weren’t any panic buttons being hit.
It was stated around the table that snow removal budgets often average out over the years, because although some years they go over budget, in other years they can be well under if it isn’t as harsh a winter.
It is always difficult to know how much money to budget for any upcoming season, it was noted at the meeting.
“It’s like throwing a dart,” said Gerry Verran, the town’s director of finance.
