An act of heroism in Yarmouth County from last summer has been officially recognized.
On Aug. 11, 2013, Evan Amirault, an Eel Brook resident, saved a man from drowning and, in appreciation of his life-saving efforts, the Municipality of Argyle presented him with an outstanding citizenship award.
The presentation took place at Argyle municipal council’s March 25 committee-of-the-whole session, where Councillor Nicole Albright, who represents District 5 – where Amirault lives – did the honours of formally recognizing Amirault for what he did.
She provided some details of what happened, saying that Amirault was on Eel Lake with his nephew, tubing.
“He was hauling his nephew,” Albright said. “He drove (his boat) through the lake and saw a canoe that was overturned … He saw something near the overturned canoe.”
As Amirault got closer, Albright continued, he saw it was a hand in the water.
“He saw that there was somebody struggling and actually pulled the man out of the water and into his boat and subsequently saved his life,” she said.
The man acknowledged just how close a call it was and how Amirault had found him just in time, Albright said.
“The man afterwards told Evan that it was his last attempt to get somebody’s attention, that he was actually going to go down and he wouldn’t have made it back up,” she said.
Given what he did, Amirault is deserving of recognition, she said.
Addressing Amirault, Albright said, “On behalf of the Municipality of Argyle, I’d like to present this award to you and I’d like to say thank you, congratulations, and I’m glad you’re in my district.”
The outstanding citizenship award recognizes Amirault’s “extraordinary act of heroism and quick thinking judgment.”
The presentation was one of the first orders of business at council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting, council members giving Amirault a round of applause in appreciation of his heroic deed.
