A former Town of Hantsport employee has been accused of stealing more than $5,000 from the town’s coffers.

Kellie Walsh appeared before Judge Alan Tufts on an indictable charge of theft over $5,000 March 25.

In reading the charge to Walsh, Tufts said it is alleged the money was stolen between Aug. 1, 2012 and June 6, 2013.

Rob Frost, CAO for the Town of Hantsport, says Walsh was dismissed from an administrative assistant position with the town on June 6, 2013.

“We basically brought in the RCMP as soon as we realized that there was some financial irregularities and the RCMP felt there was sufficient evidence to press charges,” Frost said.

Whether or not the town will be seeking retribution for the money that Walsh allegedly stole will be determined based on how the court case unfolds, Frost added.

Frost was unable to confirm how much money was unaccounted for, or speak to how the cash went missing.

“Because it is an ongoing court case, we can’t really comment much further,” he said.

Walsh, who will be represented by lawyer Chris Manning, is due back in Windsor provincial court April 8.
