The Western Counties Regional Library is getting ready for its April Fools Trivia Challenge, an event that will launch the library’s 2014 Adopt-a-Book campaign.

The trivia contest is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, and will be held at the library’s Yarmouth branch.

“The trivia challenge generates lots of laughter and much needed publicity for the library and its funding challenges,” said Ian White, public relations manager with the Western Counties Regional Library.

There is no registration fee, but participating teams are encouraged to adopt a book and “bribe” the contest judge while taking part in the contest.

By putting money in the “bribe box,” participants are supporting the effort to adopt books for the public library.

“It is all about fun, fundraising and literacy,” White said.

The event will take place between noon and 2 p.m., with each participating team doing a 10-minute round.

“It’s been modified to sort of fit in people’s lunch hour,” said White, noting that participants need only stay for their one round of trivia, making it a minor commitment in terms of time.

As of March 10, the library had 13 teams confirmed for the event.

The contest normally draws about 24 teams, White said. Teams can consist of two to four members. Invitations are sent to groups, businesses and other teams to take part in the event.

The event is not an annual one, but rather takes place every other year.

“It’s every two years,” White said. “It’s like the Olympics almost … We don’t want people to tire of it, so it tends to keep it fresh if you do it every two years.”

The trivia challenge marks the kickoff of the regional library’s Adopt-a-Book campaign, which runs over three months and is the library’s biggest and most important fundraiser.

Yarmouth is the largest of the branches in the Western Counties Regional Library system and also houses the library’s headquarters.

Referring to the trivia challenge, White said it has been a success, has good media support and helps get the word out about the library.

The library also is fortunate to have volunteers who help with the trivia event, he said

“We’ve been blessed with their support and they work tirelessly to come up with questions in many categories, a lot of local content,” White said. “It makes it really fun.”
