Clean up coming for Rodd Colony Inn

The president and CEO of Rodd Hotels & Resorts says the company will be concentrating on the Rodd Grand Hotel before it addresses issues inside the Rodd Colony Inn.

“Right now we are developing a plan for the Grand to deal with some other issues there and bring that up to speed,” said Mark Rodd.

The 65-room Rodd Colony Inn closed on Jan. 31, 2011. The loss of ferry service was one of the reasons for the closure but another issue included the presence of mould in a section of the building.

Several of the World Junior A Challenge teams stayed in the hotel in 2012 and 2013.

As of last week, the exterior of the building was missing siding and large patches of algae were growing on bricks and walls. The building is the first thing visitors will encounter as they emerge from the ferry terminal.

“The building is going to look a lot better than it does now,” said Rodd.

“There’s a siding issue that’s gone to tender and we are getting that fixed… they should be starting on that next week.”

The cleanup will also include power washing.

Rodd says it’s possible that the Colony Inn may open later this year or next and that the company is not planning on selling it.

“We have quite a number of rooms down there. We want to make sure that we are in a good position with the Grand first. We want to make sure that property is up and ready for the visitors.

“We just want to be able to gauge things,” he said.
