An official with Nova Star Cruises told the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce the plan is to have the new Yarmouth-Portland ferry in service, as scheduled, by the first of May.

Danny Morton, director, cruise marketing and business development with Nova Star Cruises, was the guest speaker at the Yarmouth chamber’s annual general meeting Thursday.

Addressing chamber members at the Rodd Grand Hotel, Morton said, “I am here to tell you that, as of today, we’re sailing May 1.”

He emphasized the words “as of today,” but his statement that the company still intends to have a ferry sailing between Yarmouth and Maine by the beginning of May drew applause from those attending Thursday’s chamber session.

While there have been news stories lately about the challenges facing the company in its efforts to launch the service on time, Morton said there is much happening with regard to the new service that people don’t see.

He spoke of the importance of restoring Yarmouth’s ferry connection with New England, saying the new service is generating excitement across Nova Scotia and elsewhere in the Maritimes.

Losing the Yarmouth ferry a few years ago affected not just Yarmouth but many other areas too, he said, making it a regional issue, not just a Yarmouth one.

He encourages everyone to be ready for the new vessel.

“It’s going to be a really exciting journey,” he said.

Morton’s presentation to the chamber followed the business portion of the organization’s AGM, including the unveiling of a commemorative coin the chamber plans to issue that will help celebrate the launch of the new ship.

The $10 coin will feature an image of the vessel on the front, the chamber logo on the reverse side.

Karen Churchill remains the chamber’s president. She was sworn in by Mayor Pam Mood at the March 6 AGM.

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Over and over deadlines have been posted, and not once has a single one been met. If they had, as of this moment fares would be posted, reseervations would be taken, and the boat would be underway from the far East. To expect them to hold to a May 1 sail date is absurd. Far more likely is for them to delay, delay, delay, milk more Canadian dollars, and end up in bankrupsy before a single trip is ever made.

"I am here to tell you that, as of today, we're sailing May 1" Sure,... "as of today"....... but as of tomorrow ??? There have been so many snafus/delays already. I think Danny may need to borrow a sail boat in Yarmouth, to do any "sailing May 1".
