Shelburne to hire tourism/events coordinator on its own

The Town of Shelburne will be hiring its own tourism and events coordinator.

Earlier this year a proposal to jointly fund a position was torpedoed by the Municipality of Shelburne, which had caused a lot of concern for the future of events like Founders Days.

 In a special meeting held on Monday, Feb. 17 to discuss the matter, Council voted to hire a coordinator for a two-year term.

There was some urgency to the issue, as planning for some events and festivals this summer is already weeks behind schedule. The Town also wanted a person to help organize events for this summer’s cruise ship visits.

Some councillors had balked at the $45,000 price tag attached to the proposal but Town CAO Dylan Heide noted that the Town of Lockeport was interested in sharing the cost of the position.

Events planning had been taking up much of the town’s economic development officer’s time. An events coordinator could ease that burden and also be a champion for the burgeoning cruise ship visits to the area, among other things.

The Municipality of Shelburne last month voted against hosting a joint tourism coordinator position with the towns of Lockeport and Shelburne.

The municipality would have been footing 54 percent of the budget of the position.

The Town also voted to accept responsibility for Founders Days from the municipality but will be requesting a financial contribution towards to the annual event.

Local planners cautioned that events will continue to need to have community support to be successful as a coordinator cannot do it all.

The coordinator will be hired before March 31.
