UPDATED: 2:06 p.m. after speaking to the mother

A mother and her two small children escaped unhurt from a burning car in Ashmore just outside Weymouth on Hwy. 1.

Witnesses saw the car, a four-door Oldsmobile Intrigue, pull to the side of the road, heading west, about 10:40 a.m.

The car was smoking at that time but soon burst into flame. The flames were concentrated in the front of the vehicle.

A firefighter who happened to be driving behind the smoking car, helped the mother remove her children and carseats from the back seat. The mother and children took shelter in a nearby residence.

Traffic stopped in both directions for about 45 minutes.

Weymouth Fire Department responded to the call and extinguished what was left of the car.
