Acadia Kinesiology students take on the Acadia Axemen as part of the Hearts on Ice broomball challenge.
The Valley Cardiac Rehab Society and Hearts on Ice are helping people with chronic illnesses build healthier futures.
The society’s 18th annual skating party fundraiser was held at Acadia Arena in Wolfville on Feb. 9, along with walking, games, entertainment, a broomball challenge, food and refreshments. The event is the society’s principle fundraiser, having raised $500,000 over its history.
“It’s a very successful fundraiser,” said Dr. Howard Wightman, the rehab program’s medical director.
The program began more than 20 years ago as a volunteer-run, 10-week initiative offered twice a year to patients who had suffered a heart attack. It has since expanded and evolved to provide year-round programs for people afflicted with all forms of heart disease, stroke victims and people with lung disease and diabetes.
