Seven hardy souls braved a double-digit wind chill to jump into the waters of St. Mary’s Bay at Sandy Cove.

The Digby Neck Polar Bear Club held their 13th dip at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1 with the water steady at 0ºC, the air at -8ºC and the wind making it feel like -19.

As always friends built a bonfire on the beach and held towels and blankets ready, while they shook their heads, laughed and snapped pictures.

The dippers this year, all of whom earn a certificate from the DNPBC, were Emma and Pete Gywn, Willow and Jeanna Walker, Anna-Marie MacKenzie Kelly, Cindy Graham and Janet McNeill.

The swimmers and supporters gathered at MacKenzie Kelly’s house for a potluck – the most popular dish there was of course a hot and spicy chilli.
