Digby Mayor Ben Cleveland took a suitcase load of scallops with him to Ottawa for a conference on tidal energyon Nov. 19.

Looking back over the last year, there have been many positives for Digby and many challenges, but a New Year’s message should not focus on the negatives, but on the many positive things that are happening in our area.

One of the most visible is the $7,500,000 in improvements to the port facility which will be completed in the spring. As the result of these improvements, the fleet has grown from 50 boats to as many as 90 or more during the season, and as many as 100 plus people working in the region.

Renewable energy opportunities have Digby entrenched in the minds of many national and international firms as the place to be. Tidal activity is already increasing with a research vessel testing the waters of the Digby Gut; fuel and water is being purchased locally for the efforts underway further up the bay.

The Princess of Acadia’s future is secure with the announcement of the $60 million replacement procurement.

The various festivals held during the year continue to bring many new visitors to our town, so much so that you can go anywhere in the province and hear comments such as “things seem to be happening in Digby.” That’s the result of Scallop  Days, Fire Truck Rally, Lobster Bash and the Wharf Rat Rally.

One of the most difficult challenges (did I not say “let’s not talk about challenges”) has been attracting doctors to our region. We have a new doctor who has just arrived and started his practice. Over the next 18 months, we will have another three doctors becoming members of our community and construction of the collaborative Health Care Center will be underway. With the walk-in clinic, the Nurse Practioners and the mobile clinic, the future of health care looks bright for our town.

Many positives for Digby and many challenges. But reminding everyone what the challenges are is not the answer, working together and finding the solutions is the way to move forward.

Along with all the new hopes and promises that the New Year will bring, I hope it also brings us a lot more opportunities to work together. I wish everyone a very Happy and Successful Year ahead.
