The provincial government announced interim funding for French-language family resource centres.

Gordon Wilson, MLA for Clare-Digby was in Pointe-de-l'Eglise today on behalf of Community Services Minister Joanne Bernard, to announce a $30,000 funding commitment for La Pirouette.

La Pirouette runs French-language family resource centres in Pointe-de-l'Eglise, Tusket, Isle Madame and Halifax.

"We want to continue to ensure that Acadian and Francophone children across the province have the best possible start in life," said Michel Samson, Minister of Acadian Affairs.

La Pirouette is sponsored by le Centre provincial de ressources prescolaires.

"From a linguistic, cultural and identity perspective, it is crucial for the French-speaking community that the government takes into consideration the unique needs of this population," said Suzanne Saulnier, executive director of Centre provincial de ressources préscolaires. "I sincerely thank the Department of Community Services of Nova Scotia for recognizing these needs and offering us this contribution today."

These family resource centres provide a variety of programs and services, including:

-- a lending library with appropriate selections for preschool children

-- physical activity programs for preschool children and their parents and grandparents

-- evenings dedicated to support the health and well-being of mothers with young children.

The centres also promote services that are available to families with children and offer liaison between families, communities and government.

"I have participated in la Pirouette's program Jouons ensemble with other mothers and their babies," said Rayna Comeau, mother of nine-month-old Clarisse. "It has helped me a lot by socializing with other mothers and their babies. We learn a lot from each other."

The government has committed to increasing funding support for the province's family resource centres in 2014-15.
