Lockeport Mayor Darian Huskilson.

The Mayor for the Town of Lockeport is curious and came to a recent meeting where the reasons for amalgamation were presented by a committee looking into the possibility of amalgamating the Town of Shelburne and the Municipality of Shelburne.
Darian Huskilson has previously spoken out bluntly against the idea of amalgamation and he says his presence at a recent meeting promoting amalgamation did not mean he has had a change of heart.
“I was curious,” he states. “But I still find amalgamation an old school way of doing things.”
He says while the ideals behind amalgamation sound good in theory, he doesn’t believe it would be the right choice for Lockeport.
“I don’t want to be disrespectful toward any of the process but there is a lot of energy put into ideals without facts.”
He says he does not see amalgamation benefiting Lockeport.
“Some people want to put a negative spin on those who don’t support amalgamation,” says Huskilson. “I get upset when people say we are stupid for not going that direction.”
He says as far as duplicate positions were concerned he was against cutting those jobs.
“Why would we want to kill long-term, sustainable jobs,” he says.
He explains instead of amalgamation there are other ways of improving governance. In 2006 the town conducted a governance study looking at anything and everything including amalgamation so that the town could be better run.
“Since then we have increased our capacity,” he says. “The Town of Lockeport is doing fine.”
