A drug bust in Windsor Wednesday afternoon saw the RCMP crack down on illicit drugs in the downtown core.

On Dec. 4, at approximately 4:45 p.m., RCMP members from the Windsor town and rural detachments, along with the Street Crime Enforcement Unit, executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at a residence on Gerrish Street.

Once inside the building, located at 73 Gerrish Street, RCMP seized a quantity of cocaine, marijuana, prescription drugs, cash and a replica handgun.

Staff Sgt. Dan Austin said the successful operation was the result of hours of investigation and legwork. The end result, he noted, was the removal of drugs destined for the streets.

“It’s one of our bigger social problems,” said Austin in an interview Dec. 6.

“The use and abuse of narcotics not only is an issue for the person using drugs but it fuels crime. People steal, people break into places, commit criminal acts in order to obtain funds or goods to sell or swap with persons who are engaged in drug trafficking to feed their habit. It’s a big social issue that has a lot of different tentacles to it.”

Three men and one woman, between the ages of 19 and 47 years, as well as a 17-year-old boy, were arrested without incident.

They are each facing charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. They are due to appear in Windsor provincial court in January 2014. The investigation is continuing.

Austin said the RCMP can’t stress enough how important it is for members of the public to call the police, or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers, whenever suspicious behaviour is noticed.

“The more people that are helping us police the community, providing us with information on illegal activity — be it property crime, drugs, illegal cigarettes, that sort of thing — allows us to make the community safer and that’s what we’re here for.”
